The German Climate and Technology Initiative (Deutsche Klima- und Technologieinitiative, DKTI)

With the DKTI, Germany has created an instrument within the framework of its contribution to international climate finance that, compared to existing instruments, sets a new trend with its technology focus. The initiative is financed by the “Special Energy and Climate Fund”.

According to the German federal government, the DKTI has the following priorities:

  • promoting the development and distribution of technological solutions in newly industrialized and developing countries – including least-developed countries (LDCs) – as a contribution toward fulfilling international climate policy commitments
  • creating a framework that favors deploying technology for climate protection
  • developing international markets for German industry

The DKTI concept provides incentives for a tighter integration of the scientific community and private sector. In 2011, six programs in five countries with a total volume of nearly €600 million were approved.
